With a beautiful website, I was really looking forward to using my 1 hour massage with foot massage add-on gift certificate that came in the mail on beautifully printed paper…so I book my appt and head on out across the valley to the Ultimate Skin Spa. Spa Review Ultimate Skin Calabasas CaliforniaWhen I get there, I am escorted through the short hall into the most ity-bity bathroom that is cluttered with local promotional perfumes and what not and told to change into a robe and wait outside the bathroom on a small stool for my therapist. Ok so I see a few lockers squished right across the shower, so I figure that at least my stuff will be safe and am thanking my lucky stars that no one else is in the bathroom area with me…

When my therapist escorts me to the massage room, she asks me to pick out of the scented lotions (cucumber or lavendar or something) and then has me lay down on the table. She states that she will first do my hour massage, then do my foot add on, and off we go.

2 minutes into the massage, I am usually asked if the pressure is ok…and so I wait, because it really isn’t ok. It’s super light and not really doing ‘the job”. So the next minute or so goes by, and I ask if she can increase the pressure a bit. Now mind you, I for sure do not like deep tissue massage by any means, nor do I like too strong of a massage, but I do want something more than cirucluar touch…you know what I mean? Ok, so back to my request…which she then replies “ok, well this is the pressure for swedish massage which is what you paid for, and what you are asking for is a Sports Massage or something to that effect (which basically comes down to approx. $10 more I am assuming). Umm, ok lady, awkward moment…but she does increase the pressure slightly.

By the end of the whole session, I was somewhat annoyed at the whole sports/swedish comment and not really able to not be annoyed at the thought of tipping this lady, and not looking forward to valley traffic, and most definitely NOT wanting to risk anyone else being in the tiny bathroom.

Massage over, the bathroom is indeed in use by someone else, so I hop into the fiberglass shower with a plastic cover and attempt to shower off the oils and basically get out of the way of the lady who is changing in the only other open area in the bathroom.

On my way home, I decided that I would never ever judge a spa by it’s website ever again!
