Flirt Salon, Burbank

Some people are put on this earth to beautify America, one eyebrow at a time. Sandi Salerno is one of those people. Flirt Salon is where it all goes down.

First: A long and well-deserved digression lavishly praising Sandi’s relentlessly thorough waxing skills – my original reason for seeking her services more than a year ago, and also my primary reason for following her from two other salons to her new place Flirt, which she opened at the beginning of the summer. It is notable that I am, in Sandi’s own words, “a big baby.” I may have been blessed in the womb by the Not Very Much Body Hair Fairy, but I was sadly equally blessed by the Overly Sensitive Skin Fairy, and I have been known to sing a lot of opera whilst prostrate on Sandi’s table. Opera like high-pitched, drawn-out cussing. Variations On The F Word In G Minor.

***WARNING: REFERENCES TO LADYPATCHES AHEAD***

Sandi works fast, and this last time, in deference to my prissily delicate skin, deforested my downstairs using three different kinds of wax – honey wax on the bikini line, blue glop for most of the rest, and some new cream wax stuff on the parts that usually make me want to punch walls when they are depilated. I kept meaning to scream, but actually, this way it didn’t hurt too badly, and it was over before I knew it.

Also, she is thorough. Behold the following testimonial to her handiwork, an exchange from my personal life.

Me: I think she missed a spot.
Intimate Friend: She didn’t miss shit.

Also, Sandi is smart and peppy and rad. Odds are good that she will serenade you while she spas you up. She does a lovely John Mayer cover, and sings backup to JT that will have you pausing to Hammer Time.

But back to the brows. I don’t know how she knows how to do what she does, but the woman is gifted; she is to eyebrows what Michelangelo was to marble. Everyone I have seen go into her little room for the brow treatment comes out looking better than great. Personally, I have always had decently behaved brows, but ever since Sandi began touching them with her magical powers, the compliments have been flying 2 fast 2 furious. Eyebrows! They are small. They cover a tiny percentage of one’s face. And yet, one millimeter of shaping and two or three hairs tweezed can make the difference between “hey, nice brows” and “HEY, NICE BROWS!!!!” And she definitely knows which millimeters and which two or three hairs to adjust. I have not gotten cat-called about my brows yet but I am certain that that lies in my immediate future. By the way, it is very worth mentioning that Sandi is expert at administering a no-sting lash tint.

The Flirt menu is not limited to waxing and shaping and tinting, oh no, my friends, they also offer a variety of facials and peels and microdermabrasion. And now there are two new aestheticians on board, Meredith and Ginger, and what with Sandi’s love of perfection (as referenced above regarding my below), I can only assume that their skills are both solid and mighty.

The salon itself is very cute, with throw pillows and fresh drinking water, a luscious chocolate-toned paint job that soothes all those last-minute panics of “OMG I am getting major amounts of hair ripped from their follicles,” plus a bathroom medicine cabinet that is 200% rewarding of snoopers. But whatever, Sandi could be doing her thing in a sewer and I would be there by the time you finish reading this sentence. Though they’ve barely been open two months, Flirt won Best Of Burbank, AND they got tapped to work backstage at the Video Music Awards this year, so you better go see for yourself there asap, because Nostradomus says you will be lucky to get an appointment after that little shindig. I myself am considering booking the next 10 years’ worth of spa services right now.
