Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow…

Aug 14 2008

I went in for my last massage at Camarillo’s Massage Envy, as I cancelled my membership after over 2 years of really enjoying the benefits of massage. Today I had an appointment with Harmony and she was absolutely the BEST. She had the best aromatherapy techniques and a really smooth and strong touch. I’m super sad that it’s my last one. Sigh…

Sunny Wellness - Chinese Foot Massage

Aug 12 2008

25 Bucks, 1 hour chinese style foot massage is just right behind that door…the one with the neon OPEN sign right on Chatsworth in Granada Hills. I’ve been hearing major buzz on these mini-spas popping up all over town (there is one on nordoff & de soto, and on devonshire & mason) so of course, I had to go check it out, especially since the weekly money mailer pack has $5 off coupons, so you’re looking at 20 bucks for 1 hour.

Ok so, I found parking right outside the front door, and when you walk in, you have to hush it, because you step right into a room full of massage chairs, with people sitting in them and massage therapists crawling all over them. I kid you not…

I am immediately shuffled into a chair - and being that I travel now with my ipod and audio book, I was glad to hide behind the earbuds and not hear the weird silence that was overbearingly loud. My therapist came out with a hot bucket of plastic-lined herb infused water and put my feet in it to soak, while she reclined the chair and started working on my scalp & shoulders. By the time she she got down to my feet, they were super soft from whatever was in the water, and I got an amazing reflexology foot massage with some sort of thick salve that my feet seemed to drink in. AMAZING! She reclined the chair all the way down to a full laying down position and asked me to flip over. The chair even had the face cut-out thing - dud where did that come from?? A fabulous full back massage (btw you are totally clothed during this whole experience) and when I woke up, I was hoping that they used some sort of disinfection process after the chairs because I was drooling all over that chair - lol gross!!

Anyway - for 20 bucks, my feet feeling like velvet and all my muscles loosy-goosy, I will totally be making this a repeat spot! Fabulous!

Deep Tissue Massage

Nov 19 2007

I just got my first deep tissue massage - and I’m not really sure what to think. During the actual massage, it was soooo euphoric and relaxing and almost exhausting. It was probably the most effective massage experience I’ve ever had because it forced me to relax my muscles and focus on my breathing, but now, approximately 6 hours later, I feel like I have been hit by a truck. I’m sooooo achy and tired, and I just want to pack it up and lounge in bed for the first time at 10 pm in years.

Ouch.

Thai Yoga Massage

Nov 4 2007

Ok people, I’m not really sure if I like the Thai Yoga massage…and maybe because yoga is actually challenging to me, so I don’t really find a massage that incorporates any sort of flexibility and restrictive moves to be relaxing in any capacity. It’s hard enough to even undergo a Shiatsu massage for me, which I suppose is a red flag that I am either choosing to ignore or am going to have to address later on…but back to the TYM review:

I booked an appointment at one of my favorite spas Burke Williams Sherman Oaks. I took my shower, sat in the hot tub for a while and was waiting in the quiet room in my fluffy BW robe. When the therapist called for me, she was wearing a gi and a martial arts style headband. I kind of wondered why my therapist was rocking a teenage mutant ninja turtles motif, but then thought that maybe I was being completely out of line and politically incorrect and just sucked it up to being ignorant and followed her to the room. On our way to the room, she asked if I had ever experienced an ‘eastern style massage” before - answer: no. Her response was that it was very ‘interactive’ and that I needed to ‘work with her’ to make it easier. Hmmm….ok.

Massage @ the Mall

May 6 2007

My last visit to the woodland hills Topanga mall rendered a fabulous cami from Fourth & Towne (A banana republic / gap store with extended sizes) a lovely lunch at the Hana Grill & a 20 minute $24.00 chair massage. I’ve never really found the little massage spots to be very relaxing, and getting a massage in the mall in front of people walking by has always made me a bit nervous, but it was a quiet mid-week day and so we went for it.

The chair - to me - was much more relaxing and effective than a flat massage table, because it seems to be ergonomically correct - and after laying face down for 30 minutes my back usually starts to ache - yes, even immediately after a massage.) Anyway - where was I? Oh yea. the mall - getting a massage. And I would do it again - it was a hardcore - relaxing power massage.

The only thing that I would change is maybe plug in my ipod to drown out the mall echo & elevator music and for sure will NOT eat before a massage ever again. Talk about queasy!

The Massage Place - Oxnard

Mar 4 2007

Located at “The Palms” which actually is the retail center for out of date “Outlets” (not to be confused with Camarillo’s Premium Outlets) The Massage Place is best described as the “Supercuts’ of massage centers. I don’t know this for sure, but I totally think the therapists there are students who are studying massage or recently graduated, which isn’t totally a bad thing, but after two visits and 1 referral, the entire experience was just sort of ‘beginner-like”. Still, at around $45 per visit, it still is less than 50% than you would pay at a more upscale day spa. Sometimes I am more concerned with the bottom dollar than the ambiance, so I will definitely keep this number in the PDA.

Reflexology

Feb 25 2007

Being a footfanatic, I have always thought that reflexology and me would be a match made in heaven. Notsomuch. Reflexology, or zone therapy, is the practice of stimulating points on the feet, hands and ears, in order to encourage a beneficial effect on some other parts of the body, or to try to improve general health. Reflexology is most commonly performed on the feet, moving on to the hands and/or ears where physical restraints, such as veruccas or fractures, apply.

Practitioners believe the foot to be divided into a number of reflex zones corresponding to all zones of the energy of the body, and that applying pressure in the form of massage to “tight” or “gritty” areas of a person’s foot will stimulate the corresponding part of the energy body and assist the self-healing process. Contrary to some beliefs, reflexology does not seek to diagnose or cure medical conditions - merely imbalances in the energy of the body.** From Wikpedia.com

My final determination has concluded that the non-pressured pressure doesn’t really seem worthwhile to spend and entire hour on while my feet get stretched and moved around and find that most massage therapists will actually incorporate elements of reflexology into the massage appointment. And after experiencing it firsthand, I realize that my dentist Dr Tank’s nurse actually uses reflexology on my ear while the dentist is injecting my gums with the numbing agent. Interesting!

Anna Flores - Oxnard

Oct 23 2006

One of my favorite things to do is book an appointment with Anna Flores, an amazingly great massage therapist. She comes with everything you need, even a cd if you want to listen to some atmosphere music (but I must have my classical masterpieces playing on low volume). After an hour swedish massage with Anna, I can’t even see straight so the convenience of her coming out to my house for an appointment is perfect, as I can crawl into bed afterwards and sleep soundly! If you live in the Oxnard area and are looking for an amazing massage experience, send me an email and I will pass your information on to Anna…and enjoy!!
