Dry Shampoo - Hair Powder

Aug 13 2008

Ok people, I have a final list of a bunch of different hair powders that I have finally given a full run for review. A while back, I had thought about trying the Bumble & Bumble hair powder and ended up trying a whole bunch of Hair powders. dry shampoo, hair refreshers and all the other buzz keywords that basic powder is marketed these days.

and so I ended up actually trying a bunch of different ones - here goes the roundup:

Bumble & Bumble hair powder in black: This came in an aerosol can, and surprisingly enough the formula didn’t clog the spout, but beware! The powder is BLACK. I mean SUPER-black. I ended up choosing this one because my hair was a really dark brown and thought that the brown formula might end up looking weird, so I went with black, but it ended up being too dark. It did cost a bundle, I think like 29 bucks, but I ended up getting most of my money back by selling it on ebay.  Anyway, besides it going on super dark, it applied rather thick. I think if maybe they had a more medium color or even a no- color it might prove to be more useful. I have super oily hair, so when I want to get a good poofy hairstyle going, hair powder does the trick. Price ranges from $24- 42 USD and available at authorized resellers or http://www.bumbleandbumble.com/

Hair Fix Vegan Hair Powder: about half the price of Bumble & Bumble and comes in various colors also, plus it guarantees organic ingredients and no-perfume which is a plus, but it comes in a shake-out style and I found it to be a bit difficult to apply, plus a bit messy. The directions read to part your hair and squeeze a small amount out into your hair and then run the powder through, but alas, that never quite worked for me…it always ended up being a super messy ordeal. Priced around $20 USD and available from MyHairFix.com. plus they guarantee satisfaction with a money-back guarantee.

Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo - This one is actually marketed as a dry shampoo rather than simply “hair powder” but it does basically the same thing as the others. It comes in only one color which is white, and has a nice aerosol spray which makes application super easy, but at approximately $35 USD for a small bottle in salons, or $22 online at various cosmetic websites, I’m not sure the 2 ounce size is worth it. Plus I didn’t really get to test it on an up-do because my son ended up using it all up!

and finally, my favorite hair powder ever, because of it’s diversity and availability:

Johnson & Johnsons Baby Powder. Yes, that’s right. Any cornstarch based formula will work, but in a jam, I’ve found that good ol’ baby powder works just fine. Plus it’s a psychological fact that the scent of baby powder is soothing to most people, so you don’t have to be afraid of heavy perfuming. Plus it costs less than $5 bucks at your local drugstore, and can be used for a variety of other purposes too. My dollar is being spent on the J & J - especially in these hard economic times! I’ve found that the easiest way to apply it is with a cotton ball, parting your hair and dusting the powder on to the part, then combing it out to distribute it into the hair. Fabulous!

Fabu-Hair

Jul 15 2008

When I see photos like these, I now wonder if she is actually holding a hair piece, because after all, photographs are only visual image aides…right?

I wish someone would have told me that when I was a vulnerable teenager and thought that photographs were actually proof positive of what we were all expected to look like. Just a total random rant on how advertising companies brainwash our thought processes…usually successfully. Ok that’s all for today.

Clamp-On Hair Extensions

Jul 9 2008

Today was hair day. Georgie tried some new method of clamping on hair extensions rather than to ’sew’ them onto the braid, but by the time I got home, 3 of the bunches had already fallen out. bleh. So now, I have to schedule another morning or afternoon to get them fixed. bummer. I don’t like when things don’t go according to plan. I think that my hair is a bit too fragile to support the actual clamping-in process. More later. It’s hot and I’m annoyed.

Laser Hair Removal - NeoSkin

Jul 2 2008

So I recently went in to Dr. Marks for a consultation about Laser Hair Removal, and left thinking that it was a bit too expensive at the moment for what I’m wanting to get done - My face, which was quoted at approx. 150 PER SESSION and needing 6 sessions, with a price break at 5 sessions, which ended up coming to like around $850 bucks, I was warned also that during the summer months, that the laser actually leaves your skin in a fragile/exposed state for discolorations due to the sun. That’s two strikes. THEN I caught a clip of Kimora Lee going for Laser treatment and complaining of the pain (and she had a camera in there so you know she was trying to look cute while in pain)…so I’m thinking that is 3 strikes.

Then Brianette sent me this flyer:

And I would be lyin’ if I didn’t say that it didn’t catch my attention…say word? I could maybe tolerate a few painful sessions and keep the cost under a C-note to rid of my waxable mustache (say it isn’t so!) …you know? Plus Staci said it doesn’t hurt…

I’ll keep you all posted on what I decide…I might just give them a call after the July 4th holiday and see what google says about the skin pigmentation issue. Oh yea, and I will just pretend that I never saw the Kimora Lee clip where she said it hurt.

Pureology - The Review

Jul 1 2008

So here’s the deal with Pureology...I love it. Hands down, it is the bomb diggity. I’ve got a rundown of all the products & what they did for me:

Purology Antifade Complex Hydrate Shampoo:
I have color treated, oily and thin hair so I have quite a battle on my head, but this stuff works great, leaves my hair full with limited color fade AND smells super great. Not too perfume-y with just the right amount of refreshing scent to not overpower the shower, which is also important to me for whatever reason. A total regular purchase for me.

Pureology Hydrate Condition:
Not too heavy or greasy, works well with the shampoo, plus it usually comes in a kit on specials with the shampoo. A total regular in my hair haul rotation.

Super Straight Relaxing Serum:
Mmmm this stuff smells fantastic, and leaves your hair soft and shiny without any heavy greasy residue when flat ironing. It also seems to ‘coat’ the hair and perhaps protect it (I am totally thinking positive here…I’m not a chemist so I can’t call it for sure) from the heat when pressing with a flat iron. Will totally buy it again.

Pureology Incharge Flexible Holding Styling Spray:
A bit too greasy/oily for my hair. It has shine elements in it, so while the immediate effect is shiny hair that is held in place, after about 3-4 hours, my hair ends up being limp and greasy. I can see where it would probably work fantastic for someone with course, dry hair, but not for me. It kind of reminded me of the pink Mink Oil mixed with a light hair spray. I’m gonna give mine to Brianette and see if it works for her.

Pureology Nanoworks Restorative Hair Treatment:
Not much different than any other hair treatment, probably won’t buy again.

Pureology InstaRepair Hair Treatment:
This product didn’t really impress me too much - it helped detangle, but it had a very masculine cologne scent and that is what pretty much threw me off. Won’t buy again.

I get my stuff from
icondrugstore.com, inc.
they have a rewards program, plus free shipping & the current competitive pricing which is way cheaper than driving all over town to get your must-haves. Plus, I love getting fun stuff in the mail rather than bills! LOL.

Nioxin Let Down

May 10 2008

A while back, before I met Georgi the Magician, my hair stylist suggested that maybe I should try the Nioxin line for my thinning hair. I was so excited after doing my research on the product that I ended up buying the econo jumbo size of the whole line. After some months of usage, I saw no improvement. I spent a few more weeks researching some alternatives to fuller hair that didn’t have to do with surgical proceedures, as women’s rogaine made me light headed, and the Nioxin scalp treatment thing turned my hairline beet red for about 30 minutes (but didn’t sting) and saw that alot of suggestions had to do with lightening the hair so that it blends more with the scalp.

I tried this, and indeed it seemed to camo’d my scalp much more…I spent around 300 bucks on the lightening procedure, color correction & sew in extensions and ended up looking fabulous! The next day I washed my hair with the Nioxin and even tho it was for chemically treated hair, the blueish pigment of the product turned my new highlights green. Another 80 dollars to remove the blueish tinge, I finally gave up on Nioxin. Another product in the ‘totally doesn’t work’ pile.

Silky Locks - Silk Therapy

Apr 27 2008

For about 8 years, I swore by BioSilk by Farouk. It was like a magic potion…just a dime size drop would bring about super lustrous, shiny and amazingly bouncy hair. And then I met Georgi B…who told me that Biosilk was soooo yesterday and it’s all about CHI Silk Infusion - so I bought a huge bottle based on his word. I really do like it, but after about 6 months of using CHI exclusively, I kind of miss the Biosilk. So I’ve decided to separate the two, using the CHI exclusively for flat ironing, and BioSilk for blow-outs. So far so good. Out of ALL the silk heat infused products out there, Farouk’s silk systems have it locked down, hands down.

I did try the shampoo/conditioners but wasn’t too impressed with them, as they are kind of heavy and weighed my hair down too much. I guess every line has a great single ‘best seller’ and don’t get it right all the time.

Dealing with Thinning Hair

Apr 12 2008

I suppose it just comes with age & genetics, but I’m starting to get a bit freaked out about my middle part getting a big wider, and going longer in the back part of my scalp. Super bummer. Especially for a glam-puss like myself, who relies heavily on fabulous hair to get me through the day. Anyhoo - I’ve done a bunch of research, and after a Rogaine attempt that didn’t fare well about a year ago, and realized that one of the added contributing factors to hair thinning in women is also due to prescription medications. Whoa. Time to make some major changes. I’ll keep you posted. For now, I got a trial size of Nioxin and an appointment with my doc to see how true the pill-hair issue is.

Eyebrow Threading

Jan 5 2008

If you have never gotten your eyebrows threaded, you really are missing out on perfectly sculptured brows. Yea it hurts, but beauty hurts, bitch! When I was in college at CSULB, I would take the bus to the Cerritos Ziba Beauty to get mehndi, threading and whatever else I was in dire need of (read: could afford at the time).

While walking in the Topanga mall the other day, I noticed a banner saying that Ziba Beauty now had a boutique on Nordstrom part of the mall. Sign me up!!! I am going to make my way there this week at some point, so my review will be up later on.

Since I am a huge fan of Ziba, I am confident that this boutique will offer fantastic services like the others in the lower southern cali area. As I get older, I am having some bad results from facial waxing and am looking forward to nice smooth skin minus the breakouts :)

here is a video I found on youtube that shows threading, although the woman who did mine put one end of the string in her mouth between her teeth and used the free hand to smooth/pull the skin.

Hair Serum

Nov 18 2007

Ohh the tresses of life. I am a newly convert to the face serum, but I must tell you that I have been a follower and avid believer of the hair serum since the mid 90’s. Back then, the holy grail of product was Farrouk’s BioSilk, which regardless if my light bill was paid or not, I had at least 2 oz., a barrel brush and a blow dryer on hand. It wasn’t until I met Georgi B that I switched from Biosilk to Chi Silk Infusion - of which I bought a huge 12 oz bottle and only need a pea size amount before a blow out, hot rollers or flat iron. It totally kicks ass.  I wear hair extensions and with the use of this stuff, I only have to replace the wefts every couple of years (I swear!).

Recently, Chastity suggested some Fekkai product (the apple cider clarifying shampoo which was fabulous) so I decided to try the Glossing creme too. I think I wrote a review of it saying it was a bit too heavy and oily for my hair type.  Recently I tried out some of the Garnier serum, Frizzease, Marc Anthony and St. Ives and blah, it was pure garbage.

Chi Silk Infusion is the business. Word up.
